Va. grand jury indicts FBI agent in fatal shooting of wife

An FBI agent was indicted Friday in Virginia on a murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of his estranged wife.

Arthur Gonzales, 42, of Stafford County was indicted on one count of second-degree murder and one count of use of a firearm in commission of a felony in the death of Julie Serna Gonzales, the Stafford County sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office declined to specify Gonzales’s occupation, but neighbors said they knew him as an FBI agent. Media accounts describe him as an instructor at the FBI National Academy at Quantico.

According to the sheriff’s office, a call about a shooting was received April 19. The office said a man told the 911 operator that he had shot a woman after being attacked with a knife during an argument at a house in Stafford. The caller said medical assistance was needed, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office said results of an investigation were presented Friday to a special Stafford grand jury, which handed up the indictments. Gonzales surrendered to authorities Friday evening, the office said.
