U.S. upgrading, extending range of PAC-3 missile defense system

WASHINGTON — The United States intends to finance an upgrade of the PAC-3 missile defense system.

The Defense Department said it allocated hundreds of millions of dollars to enhance PAC-3, sold to Gulf Cooperation Council states. The upgrade, called Missile Segment Enhancement, was meant to undergo low-rate initial production by 2014.

"The MSE extends the PAC-3 range, filling a critical performance gap, and affords greater protection for U.S. and allied forces," the Pentagon said.

In a statement on April 10, the Pentagon outlined the goal of MSE. The statement said PAC-3 would be equipped with a dual pulse, 11-inch diameter solid rocket motor as well as upgraded batteries and guidance software, enlarged fixed fins and improved lethality.

"These improvements result in a more agile, lethal interceptor missile with enhanced Insensitive Munitions compliance," the Pentagon said. "The PAC-3 MSE can be fired from a Patriot system."

The prime contractor of the upgrade was identified as Lockheed Martin, which produces the Patriot. The Pentagon said MSE would enhance PAC-3's ability to intercept tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and nonconventional warheads.
